Intake manifold replacement
The intake manifold distributes air between the cylinders.
Symptoms
- An air leak with fluctuating idle, or loss of power from broken swirl flaps.
What's included
- Its problems fall into two types: leaks from a burnt gasket or cracked plastic, and mechanical failure of the swirl flaps fitted to many modern engines. The first causes unmetered air, a lean mixture and fluctuating idle; the second causes power loss and faults. Broken flaps are dangerous because a fragment can enter a cylinder. We smoke-test the intake and inspect the flap mechanism. Replacement uses new gaskets and includes cleaning carbon deposits from the passages.
Additional checks
- Source of the leak — burnt gasket or a crack in the manifold plastic
- Condition of the swirl flap mechanism
Why it matters
Broken flaps are dangerous because a fragment can fall into a cylinder. Intake sealing is checked with a smoke machine, and replacement always includes cleaning carbon from the channels.
More details
The intake manifold distributes air to the cylinders. Problems with it come in two types: a leak from a burned gasket or a crack in the plastic, and mechanical failure of the swirl flap mechanism found on many modern engines. The first causes unmetered air intake, a lean mixture, and fluctuating idle; the second causes loss of power and fault codes. The danger of broken flaps is that a piece can fall into the cylinder. We check the intake for leaks with a smoke machine and inspect the condition of the flap mechanism. Replacement is done with new gaskets and mandatory cleaning of the ports from carbon buildup.
