Chain guide replacement
Timing-chain guides are the plastic rails over which the chain slides.
Symptoms
- Rattling, the chain slapping the cover, sometimes jumping a tooth with a loss of power.
What's included
- The plastic wears, cracks and breaks; fragments fall into the sump and may block the oil pickup. A damaged guide lets the chain move freely: it rattles, strikes the cover and may jump a tooth, shifting timing and causing faults and power loss. We replace guides together with the chain and tensioner, always inspect the sump for old plastic fragments and check pickup cleanliness. After assembly, we set the marks and verify timing with a scanner on the running engine.
Additional checks
- Sump checked for fragments of the old plastic guide
- Oil pickup cleanliness
- Timing marks and phases checked with a scanner on the running engine after assembly
Why it matters
Chips from a broken plastic guide can fall into the pan and clog the oil pickup, so it's inspected with every chain job. Guides are replaced together with the chain and tensioner.
More details
Chain guides are plastic rails that the timing chain slides against. The plastic wears, cracks, and breaks, and the pieces fall into the pan and can clog the oil pickup. A broken guide gives the chain freedom to move: a rattle appears, the chain slaps against the cover, and it can jump a tooth — which throws off the valve timing, triggers fault codes, and causes power loss. We replace the guides together with the chain and tensioner, always inspect the pan for pieces of old plastic, and check that the oil pickup is clear. After reassembly we set the timing marks and check the timing with a scanner on the running engine.
