Timing sprocket replacement

Timing sprockets transmit rotation from the crankshaft to the camshafts.

Symptoms

  • Even a new chain starts knocking fast on worn sprockets.

What's included

  1. Their teeth wear together with the chain: a stretched chain cuts into the metal, so even a new chain soon becomes noisy on worn sprockets. We assess tooth condition at every chain replacement and explain whether the sprockets remain serviceable or must be replaced. We pay particular attention to sprockets with cam phasers: their internal mechanisms also wear and cause timing-correlation faults. After installation, we set marks using the manufacturer’s procedure and verify actual timing with a scanner, rather than relying only on aligned marks.

Additional checks

  • Timing marks set per the manufacturer's procedure after sprocket installation
  • Actual phases verified with a scanner, not just aligned marks

Why it matters

A stretched chain saws into the tooth metal, so sprocket condition is checked with every chain replacement. Variable-timing sprockets have their own mechanism that wears too and triggers correlation faults.

More details

Sprockets transfer rotation from the crankshaft to the camshafts. Their teeth wear along with the chain: a stretched chain "saws" into the metal, and even a new chain on worn sprockets quickly starts knocking. So we assess the condition of the teeth at every chain replacement and tell you honestly when the sprockets are still good and when they genuinely need replacing. Sprockets with built-in phasers get special attention: they have their own mechanism, which also wears and produces valve-timing mismatch fault codes. After installation we set the timing marks following the manufacturer's procedure and check the actual timing with a scanner, not just visual alignment of the marks.
