Symptoms
- A dull knock in the lower engine, falling oil pressure, an oil warning light.
What's included
- When they wear or spin, a dull knock appears in the lower engine, oil pressure falls and a dashboard warning illuminates. The cause usually lies elsewhere: oil starvation, a clogged pickup, a worn pump or overdue oil changes. We therefore identify the source rather than simply replace the shells, otherwise the new ones suffer the same fate. Before assembly, we measure crankshaft journals, select shells by size and check clearance with plastic clearance gauge material. We always flush metal debris from the oil galleries.
Additional checks
- Measuring crankshaft journals before assembly
- Checking clearance with plastic clearance gauge material
- Flushing metal debris from the oil galleries
Why it matters
The cause is almost always outside the bearing shells themselves: oil starvation, a clogged pickup, a worn pump. Without finding the source, new shells fail the same way.
More details
Bearings are the crankshaft's plain bearings. When they wear out or spin, a dull knock appears in the lower part of the engine, oil pressure drops, and the warning light comes on. The problem almost always has a cause outside the bearings themselves: oil starvation, a clogged oil pickup, a worn pump, or overdue oil changes. So we don't just replace the bearings — we find the source, otherwise the new ones will fail the same way. Before assembly we measure the crankshaft journals and select bearings to match, checking clearance with plastigauge. We always flush the oil galleries of debris.
