Piston replacement
Pistons are replaced for scoring, a burnt crown, broken ring lands or after hydrolock.
Symptoms
- Scoring, a burnt-through crown, or broken ring-land webs after a hydraulic lock.
What's included
- These failures often result from overheating, detonation or unsuitable fuel. Piston replacement goes together with cylinder boring or honing: fitting a new piston in a worn bore gives incorrect clearance and immediate oil consumption. After machining the block, we select pistons in the repair size and check thermal clearances and piston orientation. We always identify what damaged the parts, otherwise the failure will recur.
Additional checks
- Selecting pistons in the repair size after block machining
- Checking thermal clearances
- Checking piston orientation
Why it matters
A new piston can't go into a worn, unbored cylinder — the clearance would be wrong, and the engine would start burning oil right away. The cause of the original failure is always identified, or the same thing happens again.
More details
Pistons are replaced for scoring, a burned-through crown, broken land between the ring grooves, and after a hydraulic lock. This is often the result of overheating, detonation, or running on the wrong fuel. Piston replacement always goes together with boring or honing the cylinders: a new piston can't be fitted into a worn cylinder — the clearance would be wrong, and the engine would start burning oil right away. We select pistons to match the repair size after machining the block, and check the thermal clearances and correct piston orientation. We always find out what caused the parts to fail — otherwise it happens again.
