Turbocharger replacement

A turbocharger is replaced when restoration is impossible: a destroyed impeller, shaft scoring, damaged housing or critical bearing wear.

Symptoms

  • A destroyed impeller, scoring on the shaft, critical bearing wear — a rebuild is no longer possible.

What's included

  1. Before replacement, we always identify the cause: failure often results from oil starvation, a blocked oil drain, dirty or old oil, or foreign-object entry. Unless the cause is removed, a new turbocharger will not last. The work therefore includes flushing or replacing oil lines, changing the oil and filter, checking crankcase ventilation and cleaning oil contamination from the intake tract.

Additional checks

  • Crankcase ventilation checked
  • Intake tract cleaned of oil

Why it matters

In most cases a turbo fails not on its own but from oil starvation, a clogged drain, or dirty oil. If the cause isn't fixed, a new turbo won't last long either.

More details

The turbo is replaced when restoration is no longer possible: a destroyed impeller, scoring on the shaft, a broken housing, or critical bearing wear. Before replacement we always find out the cause — in the vast majority of cases a turbo doesn't fail on its own, but because of oil starvation, a clogged oil drain, dirty or old oil, or foreign objects getting in. If the cause isn't fixed, a new turbo won't last long. So the scope of work includes flushing or replacing the oil lines, changing the oil and filter, checking the crankcase ventilation, and cleaning any oil that made it into the intake tract.
