Center support bearing replacement
The centre support bearing provides intermediate support for the propshaft.
Symptoms
- Humming in a certain speed range and vibration felt through the cabin floor.
What's included
- Wear causes humming within a certain speed range and vibration transmitted through the cabin floor. The support’s rubber carrier often deteriorates with the bearing, adding a knock when moving off. We check play and rubber condition: replacing only the bearing will not help if the carrier is damaged. We remove the shaft and mark the relative flange positions, since changing the assembly position introduces vibration. After assembly, we balance the shaft and road-test the vehicle.
Additional checks
- Checking the assembly for play and the rubber carrier's condition
- Marking the relative flange positions before removing the shaft
- Test-driving the vehicle after assembly
Why it matters
The support's rubber sleeve often fails along with the bearing — replacing just the bearing won't fix it. Flip the shaft the wrong way around and a fresh vibration appears out of nowhere.
More details
The center support bearing holds the driveshaft's intermediate mount. Its wear shows up as a hum in a specific speed range and vibration that transmits into the cabin floor. Often the rubber mount housing fails along with the bearing — in that case a knock on setting off is added too. We check the assembly for play and inspect the condition of the rubber: replacing only the bearing when the housing is worn won't fix the problem. The job is done with the shaft removed, marking the relative position of the flanges — reinstall the shaft the other way around and you'll get vibration out of nowhere. After reassembly we balance the shaft and test-drive the car.
