Wheel hub replacement

The wheel hub transfers loads from the wheel to the suspension and on many vehicles comes as an assembly with the bearing.

Symptoms

  • A humming noise that grows with speed, wheel play.
  • Worn seating surfaces or stripped stud threads.

What's included

  1. Replacement is needed for a hum that increases with speed, wheel play, worn mounting seats or stripped stud threads. Before working, we confirm that the hub is the cause: worn tyres and a faulty CV joint can produce a similar hum, so replacing an expensive assembly just in case makes no sense. Corrosion often complicates removal, so we use heating and pullers without damaging the steering knuckle. After assembly, we check tightening with a torque wrench: insufficient or excessive torque quickly destroys a new bearing.

Additional checks

  • Condition of the steering knuckle during removal
  • Hub-nut tightening with a torque wrench

Why it matters

Worn tires and a faulty CV joint can cause a similar hum, so the cause is confirmed before an expensive assembly is replaced. Under- or over-tightening the hub nut sharply shortens a new bearing's service life.

More details

The hub transmits the load from the wheel to the suspension and on many cars is supplied as an assembly with the bearing. It has to be replaced when there's a hum that grows with speed, wheel play, or when the mounting surfaces are worn and the stud threads are stripped. Before starting work we confirm the cause really is the hub: worn tires and a faulty CV joint produce a similar hum, and there's no point replacing an expensive assembly “just in case.” Removal is often complicated by corrosion, so we work with heating and pullers without damaging the steering knuckle. After assembly we check the torque with a torque wrench — under- or over-tightening kills a new bearing within a few thousand kilometers.
