Coil spring replacement
A spring supports the vehicle’s weight; when it sags or breaks, the body tilts, wheel angles change and the damper operates under constant overload.
Symptoms
- The car sits lower on one side, a metallic knock over potholes, and reduced ride height.
What's included
- Common signs are the vehicle sitting low on one side, a metallic knock in potholes and reduced ground clearance. Springs usually break in winter, when metal becomes more brittle and road chemicals accelerate corrosion. We replace springs in axle pairs, select stiffness for the model and load, and inspect bump stops and spring seats, which wear together. Afterwards, we check ride height and perform wheel alignment to prevent tyre wear.
Additional checks
- Selecting spring stiffness for the model and load
- Condition of the spring seats
- Ride height and wheel alignment after replacement
Why it matters
A broken or sagging spring throws off wheel angles and forces the shock absorber to work under constant overload. Springs are replaced in pairs, with the bump stops inspected.
More details
The spring carries the weight of the car, and when it sags or breaks, the body tilts, the wheel angles shift, and the shock absorber starts working under constant overload. The most common signs are the car “sitting” lower on one side, a metallic knock when driving into a pothole, and reduced ground clearance. Springs usually break in winter: the metal becomes more brittle and road salt speeds up corrosion. We replace springs in pairs on the axle, matching stiffness to the specific model and load, and we always inspect the bump stops and spring seats — they wear out together. After replacement we check the body's ride height and perform a wheel alignment, otherwise the new springs will start “eating” the tires.
