Steering U-joint replacement
The steering universal joint connects the steering shaft to the rack and compensates for the angle between them.
Symptoms
- A distinct knock or crunch turning the wheel while stationary, slight steering play.
What's included
- When its joint wears, a characteristic knock or crunch appears when turning the wheel while stationary, and the steering shaft develops slight play that the driver feels as vagueness. This defect is often mistaken for a rack fault, leading to an unnecessarily expensive repair in the wrong place. We test the joint separately by rocking the shaft with the wheels locked, which gives a clear result. Replacement is relatively straightforward but requires precise installation in the same position, otherwise the steering wheel will sit crooked. We check that its position is symmetrical after the work.
Why it matters
This defect is often mistaken for a rack fault, leading to repair on the wrong side of the problem. The joint is checked separately, rocking the shaft with the wheels locked, for a clear result.
More details
The steering U-joint connects the steering shaft to the rack and compensates for the angle between them. When its spider bearing wears out, a characteristic knock or crunch appears when turning the wheel in place, and the steering shaft itself gets a small amount of play that the driver feels as "numbness." This fault is often mistaken for a rack problem, leading to an expensive repair starting from the wrong end. We check the U-joint separately — by rocking the shaft with the wheels locked, which gives an unambiguous result. Replacement is relatively simple but requires precise reinstallation in the same position, otherwise the steering wheel ends up crooked. After the work we check that the steering wheel sits symmetrically.
