Oil pressure test

Oil pressure is a parameter whose neglect leads to a full overhaul.

Symptoms

  • The oil pressure light has come on, or there's a cold-start knock or noisy lifters.

What's included

  1. If the pressure warning light comes on, there is a cold-engine knock, or the engine starts making hydraulic-lifter noise, actual pressure must be measured with a mechanical gauge rather than relying on the sensor, which can also fail. We connect the gauge to the oil gallery and take readings at different engine speeds and temperatures, comparing them with the manufacturer's specification. This distinguishes a faulty sensor, clogged pickup or worn pump from critical bearing-shell wear. Driving should not continue until the cause is known: oil starvation can damage an engine very quickly.

Why it matters

The sensor itself can fail, so real pressure is measured with a mechanical gauge. This tells a faulty sensor, a clogged pickup, or a worn pump apart from critical bearing wear.

More details

Oil pressure is a parameter that, if ignored, ends in an engine overhaul. If the pressure warning light comes on, a knock appears when cold, or the engine starts rattling with the hydraulic lifters, the real pressure needs to be measured with a mechanical gauge rather than relying on the sensor — it can be faulty too. We connect a gauge to the oil line and take readings at different RPMs and temperatures, comparing them with the manufacturer's spec. This lets us distinguish between three different situations: a faulty sensor, a clogged oil pickup or worn pump, and critical bearing wear. It's not worth continuing to drive until the cause is found — oil starvation kills an engine within minutes.
