Camshaft replacement

The camshaft opens the valves; its lobes wear mainly through oil starvation or prolonged running on old oil.

Symptoms

  • A characteristic knock in the head, loss of power, rough running.

What's included

  1. Signs include characteristic cylinder-head knocking, lost power, uneven running and sometimes timing faults. We inspect the shaft and bearing supports and measure runout and lobe height: the head’s supports are often worn too, so replacing the shaft alone will not solve the problem. We always identify the cause by checking oil delivery to the head. Assembly follows the bearing-cap tightening sequence and torques, after which we check timing and adjust clearances where the design requires it.

Additional checks

  • Measuring shaft runout and lobe height
  • Checking valve timing after assembly
  • Adjusting valve clearances where the design requires it

Why it matters

The bearing saddles in the head are often worn along with the shaft, so replacing only the shaft won't fix it. The cause of the wear — oil supply to the head — is always identified.

More details

The camshaft opens the valves, and its lobes wear out primarily from oil starvation or extended use of old oil. The signs are a characteristic knock in the head, loss of power, rough running, and sometimes timing-related fault codes. We inspect the shaft and its bearing journals, measure runout and lobe height: often the journals in the head are worn along with the shaft, and replacing the shaft alone won't solve the problem. We always identify the cause of wear by checking oil supply to the head. Assembly follows the correct sequence and torque for the bearing caps, after which we check the valve timing and adjust the clearances if the design requires it.
