Electric power steering replacement
Electric power steering fails differently from hydraulic steering: rather than deteriorating gradually, it usually displays a dashboard fault and loses assistance abruptly.
Symptoms
- Power assist drops out suddenly, not gradually, and a fault appears on the dash.
What's included
- The cause is not always the unit itself; it may be the steering-angle sensor, torque sensor, broken wiring or a control-unit fault. We therefore start with scanner diagnostics, read faults and check the power supply before discussing replacement. If replacement is required, we adapt the system and calibrate the angle sensor after installation; without this procedure, steering assistance works incorrectly and the fault returns. The work is completed with a road test.
Additional checks
- Steering control unit
- System power supply
- Road test after the repair
Why it matters
The cause isn't always the unit itself — often it's the angle sensor, torque sensor, or wiring, so diagnostics with a scanner comes first. After replacement, the steering angle sensor must be calibrated.
More details
Electric power steering fails differently from hydraulic: instead of gradually getting worse, a fault usually appears on the dashboard and the assist cuts out abruptly. The cause isn't always the unit itself — it can be the steering angle sensor, the torque sensor, a break in the wiring, or a control unit fault. So we start with a scanner diagnosis, read the fault codes, and check the power supply, and only then talk about replacement. If replacement is needed, after installation we perform adaptation and calibration of the angle sensor — without this procedure the assist works incorrectly and the fault returns. We finish the job with a test drive.
