Wheel bearing adjustment

Vehicles with tapered roller hub bearings require periodic clearance adjustment.

Symptoms

  • Wheel play, steering wheel shimmy, or uneven tire wear after high mileage.

What's included

  1. Overtightening overheats and destroys the bearing; leaving excessive clearance causes wheel play, steering vibration and uneven tyre wear. We set clearance according to the manufacturer's procedure, checking torque and free rotation rather than judging by feel. Before adjustment we inspect the races, cage and grease: if the metal is already worn, adjustment is only temporary and replacement is more honest. Afterwards we test the vehicle in motion and monitor hub heating.

Additional checks

  • Bearing torque and free rotation
  • Condition of the bearing cage and grease
  • Hub heating after adjustment

Why it matters

An over-tightened bearing overheats and fails, while too loose a clearance causes wheel play. If the raceways already show wear marks, adjustment only gives a temporary effect.

More details

On cars with tapered roller hub bearings, periodic clearance adjustment is required. Tighten it too much and the bearing overheats and breaks apart; leave the clearance too loose and you get wheel play, steering wheel shimmy, and uneven tire wear. We set the clearance following the manufacturer's procedure, checking the torque and the freedom of rotation rather than going “by feel.” Before adjusting we inspect the condition of the raceways, the cage, and the grease: if the metal already shows wear marks, adjustment only gives a temporary effect, and it's more honest to replace the bearing. After the work we test-drive the car and check the hub for overheating.
